Job Summary:

  • Maintain and repair various types of electrical generation and steam producing mechanical equipment and their associated auxiliary components. This position is located at our Morgantown Energy facility in Morgantown, WV.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Recognize safety hazards and follows safety guidelines for personal protection, protection of fellow workers and the protection of the public.

  • Install, maintain, test, inspect and repair generating station equipment such as, boilers, turbines, pumps, valves, heat exchangers, vessels and a variety of ancillary equipment.

  • Determine causes for major mechanical troubles of equipment and make or recommend repairs and corrections.

  • Perform preventative and corrective maintenance procedures on mechanical equipment including PDM activities.

  • Make welds on vessels, valves, turbines, piping, chutes, etc.

  • Replace packing in pumps and valves, bearings, shaft seals, sleeves, seats and other miscellaneous parts used in plant equipment.

  • Use gas and/or arc welding equipment to perform mechanical repairs and fabricate plant equipment.

  • Perform basic machining operations.

  • Clean pipes and perform other plumbing and pipe fitting tasks.

  • Set up rigging for installing/removing equipment.

  • Specify and/or order proper materials for job completion.

  • Complete required records for work performed.

  • Perform routine cleaning of work area.

  • Remove and replace insulation materials on pumps, heaters, tanks, turbines, lines, valves, etc.

  • Assist in providing skill enhancement training to other personnel.

Working Conditions:

  • Power Plant Environment-Work both inside and outside in all temperatures and climate conditions in accordance with Heat Stress procedures. Around large rotating equipment, energized electrical equipment in high noise areas, and/or in confined places, on elevations in excess of 250 feet, or from platforms at heights of 5 feet or greater. Climb stairways, ladders, and work from aerial devices.

  • Work in confined spaces, some requiring the use of respiratory protective equipment.

  • Must be prepared to work irregular or rotating shifts and respond to emergency callout 7 days a week, 24 hours a day.

  • Ability to work in mentally stressful environments: must be able to react to crises where immediate action is required to correct or curtail potentially damaging or hazardous situations.

Minimum Requirements:

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent.

  • Minimum of Two (2)years of industrial mechanical maintenance experience in the repair, inspection, and/or maintenance of related power plant or machine shop equipment including inspection and preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, fabricating and diagnostics.

  • Experience in the proper use of Welding Equipment, HyTorc (or similar) equipment, or standard Millwright or Welding training.

  • Successful candidates must have received a rating of Recommended on the NRG Pre-employment assessment test.

  • Valid West Virginia Driver s License required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Completion of Certified Welding or Mechanic training program preferred.

ADDITIONAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledgeable of environmental rules and regulations and effectively apply them to all work situations.

  • Basic knowledge of rotating equipment and knowledge of general maintenance activities and procedures.

  • Knowledge of and ability to work on underground Steam Transmission Line and Vaults.

  • Knowledge of handling and disposal of waste material generated by maintenance activities.

  • Communicate effectively verbally and in writing with management and other employees.

  • Ability to perform basic mathematics to calculate measurements and computations needed for repair and maintenance of power plant equipment.

  • Ability to follow, interpret and act on written and verbal job instructions and reports, technical manuals and data.

  • Ability to use such hand tools as wrenches, screwdrivers, sledgehammers, etc.

  • Ability to operate Company vehicles and equipment (e.g. forklift, man-lift, crane, etc.) and maintain operating licenses and certifications.

  • Ability to operate machine shop equipment such as drill presses, hydraulic presses, etc.

  • Ability to use measuring devices such as micrometers, calipers, torque wrenches, and other precision devices.

  • Ability to operate oxygen and acetylene torches.

  • Ability to certify as a pressure welder.

  • Sound interpersonal skills, able to work harmoniously in a team environment.

  • Basic computer skills including the ability to use common software MS Office, Outlook.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift, carry and position such items as large chain falls, slugging wrenches and various equipment (can weigh up to 50 lbs.).

  • Ability to climb ladders to rig heavy chain falls, use air impact wrenches, heavy equipment and parts in awkward positions, swing various weights of sledgehammers, stoop and bend to reach valves, pull on chain falls and come along.

  • Daily work expectation requires the ability to perform tasks by walking, standing, sitting, kneeling, crouching, squatting, twisting, pushing, pulling, shoveling, climbing, and in positions above and below the head, and extended from the body to complete repairs.

  • Ability to perform work from ladders, catwalks and supports at various heights up to 350 feet.

  • Ability to crawl into and perform work in tight or confined spaces.

  • Must be able to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) as required i.e.steel-toed boots, respirators, goggles, safety glasses, fall protection etc.

  • Have ability to discern and respond to verbal and auditory signals.

  • Ability to discern assorted colors.
